Cortisone and typical side effects<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Cortisone, also known as cortisone, is the inactive precursor<\/strong> of the glucocorticoid<\/strong> cortisol<\/strong>. Cortisone became known as a drug<\/strong> in the middle of the 20th<\/strong> century when it helped to temporarily relieve pain<\/strong> in a rheumatism patient. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then it has been used for many diseases, especially chronic<\/strong> or inflammatory<\/strong> (skin) diseases. However, the active ingredient causes many side effects<\/strong>. The side effects of cortisone are explained below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is cortisone?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cortisone can be produced by the body<\/strong> itself<\/strong>, but can also be manufactured synthetically<\/strong>. It is a form of the glucocorticoid cortisol that is inactivated by oxidation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cortisol<\/strong> is a stress hormone<\/strong> that is produced in the adrenal cortex and is important for carbohydrate balance, fat metabolism and protein turnover. The liver can convert cortisone to active cortisol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cortisone was discovered in the 1930s and successfully used in humans for the first time in 1948: A rheumatism patient was temporarily pain-free<\/strong> after cortisone therapy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded in 1950 for the discovery of cortisone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nowadays, corticosteroids<\/strong> or the synthetically produced cortisone acetate<\/strong> are used in therapy instead of cortisone. Glucocorticoids such as prednisolone, hydrocortisone or dexamethasone are also administered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It should be noted that an overdose<\/strong> or too long an indication can lead to serious side effects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

The effect of cortisol<\/h2>\n\n

The stress hormone cortisol fulfills several tasks in the body: it is essential in the catabolic metabolism<\/strong>, as it provides the body with energy<\/strong>, but also influences perception, thinking ability, cell division<\/strong> and cell development<\/strong> as well as inflammatory processes<\/strong> and the immune defense<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Accordingly, the effect of cortisol is divided into two areas:<\/p>\n\n
